Next time we are taking on students: September · First session free

Maesteg families have a traditional Shotokan karate club right on the doorstep. We train at Bryn Community Hall, a short drive from Maesteg town centre, on Monday and Wednesday evenings - beginners and juniors at 6pm, adults and senior grades at 7pm.

Getting here from Maesteg

Bryn Community Hall sits on Maesteg Road in Bryn, roughly 5–10 minutes by car from Maesteg town centre heading towards Port Talbot. There’s free parking at the hall, with easy drop-off by the entrance for junior classes. Members also travel in from Nantyffyllon, Caerau and Garth in under 15 minutes. Full directions and a map are on the times & location page.

Why Maesteg families choose us

We’re a genuinely family-run club affiliated to the Welsh Karate Collective, with DBS-checked, first-aid-qualified instructors and grading to a recognised national panel. Your first session is free, and the only cost to keep training is the annual WKC licence. Meet the instructors, see what happens at your first session, or read about kids’ classes and adult classes.

Classes for Maesteg children and adults

Two classes run back to back on each training night. Beginners and juniors take the 6pm hour, working through stances, blocks and strikes in short bursts with plenty of encouragement and no heavy contact. Adults and senior grades follow at 7pm, covering the same Shotokan fundamentals at a harder pace alongside kata, controlled partner work and practical self-defence. Plenty of Maesteg families train together - a parent in the later class while their child trains earlier is a common pattern here.

What it costs to train

Your first session costs nothing, and we are working to keep regular classes free while funding is secured. The only current cost is the annual Welsh Karate Collective licence - £35 in the first year, which includes a free gi, and £30 a year after that. That covers your insurance and your eligibility to grade in front of the WKC panel, so there is no separate class fee to budget for on top.

Starting from scratch

Most people who walk into the hall for the first time have never done a martial art. You do not need a karate suit, any level of fitness, or a friend to come with you - you will be paired with an experienced member and taken through the basics step by step. If you would rather watch a class first, that is fine too; come along on a Monday or Wednesday evening and see the group train before you decide.
