Next time we are taking on students: September · First session free

Looking for a traditional karate club within reach of Bridgend? Maesteg Karate trains at Bryn Community Hall in the Llynfi Valley, around 20 minutes from Bridgend via the A4063 - a straightforward run up the valley for families in the north of the county.

Getting here from Bridgend

Head north on the A4063 through Sarn and Aberkenfig towards Maesteg, then on to Bryn. Allow around 20 minutes by car; there’s free parking at the hall. Members also travel in from Pontycymer and the Garw Valley in about 15 minutes. See the timetable and map before you set off.

What we offer Bridgend-area students

Shotokan karate for children and adults, taught by qualified, DBS-checked instructors and graded through the Welsh Karate Collective. Classes run Monday and Wednesday evenings, and your first session is free. Read about kids’ karate classes, adult classes, or book your free session.

Worth the drive from the county borough

Bridgend has no shortage of sports clubs, so it is fair to ask why families make the trip up the valley. The answer is usually the size and the standard: sessions are small enough that every student gets corrected by name, and grading is done in front of the Welsh Karate Collective panel rather than by the instructor who taught you, so a belt earned here means the same thing at any affiliated club in Wales. Members travelling from Pontycymer, Blaengarw, Nantymoel and Ogmore Vale reach us in around 15 minutes; Tondu, Aberkenfig and Sarn are a straight run up the A4063.

Class times and structure

Training is on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Beginners and juniors take the 6–7pm hour; adults and senior grades follow from 7–8pm. Two classes on the same night suits families driving in from further out - one trip covers a child in the earlier session and a parent in the later one. Every class is built on the same Shotokan foundations: kihon (basics), kata (set forms) and kumite (controlled sparring), scaled to the group in front of us.

What it costs, and what happens first

The first session is free, so the only thing you risk is the petrol. After that the sole cost is the annual Welsh Karate Collective licence: £35 in your first year - which includes a free gi - and £30 a year to renew. Wear loose clothing, bring water, and turn up ten minutes early so we can introduce you to the group before the class bows in.
