THE VALUES WE TRAIN BY
WHAT IS MAESTEG SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB?
Maesteg Shotokan Karate Club is a family-run traditional Shotokan karate club serving Maesteg and the Llynfi Valley in South Wales. It teaches karate to children and adults of all abilities, training on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Bryn Community Hall on Maesteg Road in Bryn, and is affiliated to the Welsh Karate Collective (WKC) - so students follow a nationally recognised syllabus and can grade across affiliated Welsh clubs.
The club is run by a family that has trained and coached together for years. Alongside fitness, self-defence and competition, every class is built on traditional karate values - respect, focus, effort and discipline - and beginners are welcome at any time.
WHERE CAN I DO KARATE IN MAESTEG?
Maesteg Shotokan Karate Club trains at Bryn Community Hall, Maesteg Road, Bryn, Port Talbot, SA13 2RY - on the main road between Maesteg and Port Talbot. Beginners train from 6:00pm to 7:00pm and adults and senior grades from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, on both Monday and Wednesday evenings. The first session is free and you need no experience or equipment to start.
The hall is a few minutes from Maesteg town centre and easy to reach from Llangynwyd, Caerau, Nantyffyllon, Garth and Cwmfelin, as well as Ogmore Vale, Bridgend, Pontycymer and Port Talbot.
WHAT IS SHOTOKAN KARATE?
Shotokan is the most widely practised style of traditional Japanese karate, developed by Gichin Funakoshi in the early twentieth century. It is characterised by deep, stable stances and strong, direct techniques, and is trained through three pillars: kihon (basics), kata (set forms) and kumite (sparring).
Students progress through the coloured kyu belt grades towards black belt. Alongside the physical side, Shotokan places heavy emphasis on etiquette, self-control and character - the principles set out in our dojo kun.
WELSH KARATE
COLLECTIVE
The Welsh Karate Collective brings together independent, family-run dojos from across Wales under one shared standard of teaching, grading and community values - while every club keeps its own identity and instructors.
As proud WKC members, our students train to a nationally recognised syllabus, can grade across affiliated clubs, and join a wider network of karateka across the country.

★★★★★Would highly recommend this club. My son’s confidence has really grown thanks to Sensei Mike. He has a lovely encouraging manner - firm but fair, the perfect balance making him the perfect tutor! My son’s karate skills have really developed too and he has gained several belts throughout his time at the club. He’s met so many new friends and all of the other pupils are so respectful. Best club around!

★★★★★My daughter started with this club less than a year ago, she absolutely loves it. They are a fantastic group with the best Sensei teaching them. You will not find a better club to be part of 🥋

★★★★★Excellent class - both my children attend twice weekly and are learning so much as well as thoroughly enjoying it. Sensei Mike is great with all those that attend, from the youngest to the oldest. All are made very welcome and always encouraged to try their best. I would definitely recommend Maesteg Shotokan Karate 5*
