FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Everything new members and parents ask us most about karate in Maesteg and Bryn. Still not sure? Get in touch - we’re happy to help.
Do I need any experience to start?
None at all. Most members start as complete beginners. You will be guided through your first class step by step.
What age can children start?
We take school-age children in our junior classes. If you are unsure whether your child is ready, get in touch and we will advise.
Is there an upper age limit for adults?
No. Adults join us at every age and fitness level - karate is trained at your own pace.
What should I wear to my first session?
Loose, comfortable clothing and bare feet. You do not need a karate suit until you take out your WKC licence, which includes a free gi.
When and where do you train?
Bryn Community Hall, Maesteg Road, Bryn, Port Talbot, SA13 2RY, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Beginners and juniors at 6pm, adults and senior grades at 7pm.
How often can I grade?
There are two grading opportunities each year. We focus on quality over speed, so students progress when they are ready.
Who runs the gradings?
All examinations are conducted by the WKC grading panel and the WKC Chief Instructor, Sensei Bo Channon, 8th Dan.
Are your instructors qualified and checked?
Yes. Our instructors are DBS checked to Advanced level, first aid qualified, and insured through the Welsh Karate Collective.
Is karate safe for my child?
Safety is central to how we teach. Classes are structured, supervised, and there is no heavy contact for beginners or juniors.
Do you teach self-defence?
Yes - practical self-defence and awareness are part of adult training, alongside fitness and traditional technique.
What style of karate do you teach?
Traditional Shotokan karate, through the Welsh Karate Collective syllabus.
Can I just watch a class first?
Of course. You are welcome to come and watch, or jump in for your free session - whichever you prefer.
How do I book?
Send your name, the student’s age and preferred class through our enquiry form, or call or message us. We will confirm your first session.
Do you run competitions?
