Next time we are taking on students: September · First session free

What happens in your first session

You’ll be welcomed by one of our instructors, introduced to the group and paired with an experienced member so you’re never lost. A class opens and closes with a bow (a mark of respect, not religion), then moves through a warm-up, basic stances and blocks, and some simple partner work at a pace that suits you. You will not be thrown in at the deep end, and you will not be sparring on day one.

Beginners train from 6:00–7:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays at Bryn Community Hall. Come to any beginner session - there’s no need to wait for a “new term” to start. See the full timetable and directions.

What to wear and bring

  • Loose, comfortable clothing - a T-shirt and joggers are perfect for your first few sessions.
  • Bare feet (karate is trained without shoes) - bring flip-flops for walking to the mat.
  • A bottle of water.
  • No karate suit (gi) needed yet - you’ll get one free when you take out your WKC licence.

How to book

Booking takes a minute. Send us your name, the age of the person joining and which class suits, and we’ll confirm the next available session. You can turn up to that class ready to train - nothing is paid on the day.

Is it suitable for me / my child?

Yes. We teach children from school age through to adults, and beginners of every fitness level. Karate is self-paced: you progress against your own last grading, not against anyone else. Children’s classes double as a lesson in focus, respect and confidence - see kids’ karate classes. Adults join for fitness, self-defence and headspace - see adult classes. If you would rather watch a class before joining in, you are welcome to do that too.
